The possibility of a really dangerous meteorite hit the Earth is less than 0.001% but the White House is still alert.

Not long ago NASA issued a report in which it analyzed that the probability that a meteorite will hit the Earth was tiny. Even so the White House has made a strategy to reveal a possible space collision and today has made it public.

The authors of the paper are the experts of Damien IWG (Interagency Working Group for the Detection and Mitigation of the Impact of a Near-Earth Object). It is a team founded in January 2016 within the National Council of Science and Technology. This document is the result of months of work and sets out the guidelines for launching a global meteorite contingency plan.

It sounds kind of ridiculous, but it really is a much needed job that needs to be done sooner or later. The document is not yet a practical plan on how to evacuate cities or divert meteorites with nuclear missiles. Rather it is a to-do list. What it does is identify what it is necessary to do to vertebrate a plan of defense and of control of damages in case of the defense fails. It details what agencies need to be counted, what fields of science need more funding and development, what international doors to call to start coordinating efforts.
